FISH C(o)urse in Vienna, Austria

International FISH course 2006 was organised by Department of Microbial Ecology (DOME), University of Vienna, Austria from 13.2 - 17.2.2006

The corridors of the university are amazing. Huge skeletons of various animals, microscopes and other instruments are on display. It doesn't looks like university at all, more like museum. Entire city seems to have an affinity towards ancient things. There were small "museums" in nearly each and every food joint and shops I visited. No words to describe about museums and beauty in the city of Mozart.

The FISH here stands for Fluorescence in situ hybridisation. It was a wonderful course, and very informative as it was being taught by one of the best guys in the field. Team included Holger Diams, Matthias Horn, Alexander Loy, Sebastian Lucker, Frank Maixner, Kilian Stoecker and Michael Wagner. The team used to call the course as c(o)urse, you can choose between curse and course depending on your experiences. Quite polite way to put it.

The day used to start at 8 AM and then we were supposed to FISH till 9 in the evening. The grilling schedule didn't gave much chance to visit historical places in city, as university was quite far from downtown. The hotel I was staying was in the heart of the monumental city. I used to see places from outside, while travelling via tram. It is amazingly beautiful city. The best so far I had visited. The city feels very lively, maybe then I was coming from cold Finland.

Only place I visited was House of music. Good place for music lovers, its a museum and took me over 4 hours to quickly visit the place. Otherwise I used to walk through the streets and look monuments from outside in the night time and trying out different restaurants every night. Compared to Finland, it wasn't that expensive place at all. I tried to took few pics, but then it was difficult to capture good images without tripod at the night. A big blunder I committed while packing my luggage :-((

Maybe, I soon visit Vienna again and will then post you some good images from Wien.
